The
color pink was first recorded in the 17th century, where it was used
to describe pale red flowers. Since then, it has become associated
with femininity or objects that are considered feminine; it has also
been attributed to religious imagery. In the Catholic religion, pink
(or rose) symbolizes joy and happiness. Many couples prefer pink flowers
at their weddings because they connote the same love and passion of
red, but softer and gentler.
Orchids are the most common exotic pink flowers that can live in
every environment except glaciers and deserts. They’re commonly
found in the tropics–especially prominent in Asia, South America
and Central America. Pink orchids (phalaenopsis) are epiphytes, which
mean that they grow on other trees. They’re also favorable because
they are the some of the easiest flowers to care for; pink orchids
are sold as potted plants because they reproduce with ease and thrive
in artificial environments.
Red roses are tokens of passionate love, but those who want something
subtler should look at tea roses. A result of mixing China roses with
Bourbons and Noisette roses, the tea rose is a fantastic example of
tender, pink exotic flowers. The petals on this flower roll back,
and produce a pointed tip and the stalk is weak–often resulting
in a nodding or slumped look.
For something a little showier, hibiscus flowers are large and trumpet-shaped.
They are native throughout Asia, especially around Malaysia and South
Korea (both of which use the hibiscus for the national flower). In
tropical and subtropical climates, the Chinese hibiscus is the most
popular ornamental flower.
Anthuriums are popular exotic pink flowers that are native to Columbia
and Ecuador and they’re sometimes called the flamingo lily.
They grow in many forms, but they commonly climb as epiphytes–their
roots often hang down in the canopy of the rainforest. The waxy-pink
leaves usually have a yellow spike that juts out of the middle.
Dicentra is native to Asia and sometimes called bleeding heart because
the exotic pink flowers look like a heart with a drop of blood descending.
Bleeding hearts can grow in beautiful rows, but need moist and fertile
growing environments. They die back in the summer, where they will
remain dormant.
Poinsettias are exotic pink flowers that are native to Mexico. The
Aztecs revered the flower because they used it to produce dye and
as antipyretic medication. Technically, the upper leaves are pale
red (called bracts) while the actual flowers are yellow and grouped
in the center of each bunch of leaves. Poinsettias can grow up to
10 feet tall and have become popular gifts in the US due to their
size and abundance (they are the best-selling potted plant).
